The Journey: 1847
In Spring of 1847, nearly 400 Mormon lives had been lost while staying at Winter Quarters, but there was good news to come. Father Pierre Jean De Smet approached the Mormons with news that would be vital to them. He told them the directions and routes to take in order to reach Salt Lake City, Utah.
Brigham Young led his followers out of Winter Quarters and on to Utah on April 5, 1847. The journey to Salt Lake City was much less stressful for the Mormons. The conditions were in their favor, unlike when they were in Winter Quarters.
During the first part of this journey, they followed much of the Oregon trail. This trail took them down the Platte River to Nebraska, to the North Platte River to Fort Caspar, then finally through Wyoming to Fort Bridger.
At Fort Bridger on July 9, 1847, they had 116 miles until they reached their destination. The last 116 miles of this journey were the most difficult because of many factors. Everyone was filthy and weakened from the previous miles, but on July 24, 1847, they finally reached their new home, Salt Lake City, Utah. As soon as they arrived, they began to build a civilization for future Mormons to come.
An estimated 70,000 Mormons crossed the Mormon trail from 1847 to 1869.
